Research led works that translate textile structures, motifs and their surrounding histories into sound. Rather than using the textile as a controller, these projects treat its visual, material and cultural information as source material for sonic composition.

CULTURALXC0LLABS — WEAVING THE FUTURE

Fragment No. 52

As part of the Museum for Islamic Art Berlin’s CulturalxCollabs – Weaving the Future project, I received a fragment of a contemporary replica of a 17th-century Caucasian dragon carpet.

While researching the fragment, I became interested in unexpected colour variations within its pattern. I manually mapped the entire textile, turning its visual structure into a dataset.

I then developed two sonifications from this data: one translating changing colour densities into frequencies and white noise, and another using the same data to manipulate existing music associated with each colour.

The project transforms the woven surface from textile → data → sound.

BEŞ TAŞ — DÖŞEMEALTI

Research & sonification project

Developed as a continuation of Kovanlık Story, this project focuses on Beş Taş, a weaving motif characteristic of the Döşemealtı region. I traced the motif beyond the textile, researching its relationship to the surrounding landscape, regional weaving traditions and the ancient Roman road Via Sebaste.

Five surviving milestone numbers along the road became the basis for a sonic system developed together with Tarxun, translating them into a sequence of frequencies.

The work connects motif → place → historical research → sound → filter through motif, extending the research begun during my time in Kovanlık.
