WEAVING GENERATIONS

Weaving Generations is my first interactive kilim, created in 2021 and dedicated to Hatice and Reyhan, my first weaving teachers.

The work follows weaving across three generations of women. Three eli belinde female figures represent Hatice, her daughter Reyhan, and a third generation in which the continuity of weaving was lost.

The kilim contains hidden touch sensitive areas that reveal different layers of the story through videos projected directly onto its surface. These include Hatice and Reyhan’s experiences of weaving, stories behind the motifs woven into the piece, and documentation of my own process of learning to weave during the pandemic; from finding materials and learning the technique to developing my first touch sensitive textile prototypes and sharing them with Hatice.
